KEN GILES

Stretching a Walking Memory is Mr. Giles’ proposed project that explores the idea of how memory, the photographic image and walking are inherently inter-connected. Using different photographic formats ranging from the traditional 35mm, DV video and large format 4x5 camera, he would like to document repeated journeys questioning the how photographic memories can be seen as temporally contingent and ephemeral.

Artist biography: Ken Giles completed his Master of Fine Art degree in 1992 from the University of Michigan with a focus in photography.  In 1990, he received a Bachelor of Applied Art with Honors from Ryerson University in Toronto.  Mr. Giles then spent eleven years in England exhibiting and teaching art.  Currently, he is teaching at the University of Alberta in the Department of Art and Design on a sabbatical replacement.  He facilitates lectures on topics regarding photography, video art and new digital imaging technologies.  He has exhibited throughout Canada, Europe and Australia since 1989 and wrote a conference paper about “Documentary Photography and the Everyday” for Algoma University College in Sault Ste.
